Introduction:

 

Location

Taipingshan Forest Recreation Area is located in Yilan County , northeastern Taiwan . It is under the jurisdiction of Lotung Forest District Office, Forest Bureau. Its total surface area is 12631 hectares.

 

Mountain

Taipingshan is 2000 meters. The major mountains in the area lie at the northern tip of the Central Mountains , consisting mainly of the Nanhu Mountain Ranges and the Sanhsing Mountain Ranges.

 

Landform

In Taipingshan, the highest mountain is the Nanhu Mountain : 3740 meters. The landform is higher towards southeast and lower in the northeast. From the elevation of 200m to 2400m: Tuchang District is about 365m; Turtledove Marsh is 500-850m, Jhongjian District is about 900m; Taipingshan District is approximately 1950-2000m; and Cueifong Lake District is 1850-2050m. Tuchang and Turtledove Marsh fall into the category of a valley landform; meanwhile, Taipingshan is a slanting slope; and Cueifong Lake is a high mountain lake.

 

Geology

This area belongs to the tertiary rock layer of clay slate, with a majority of the features formed by erosion of grayish-black slate, forming sight shale elements. Due to the cracks in the rocks, they can be peeled off easily. In addition to the compression and erosion from the steep river, the slopes are washed off whenever there is an earthquake, rainstorm, and typhoon. Especially in the summer, frequent sliding of the mountain rocks is recorded.

 

Weather

Taipingshan has the greatest rainfall in Taiwan . Due to frequent rain and high humidity, the mist permeates the entire area all year round. The average temperature at Taipingshan (12-15 o C) is lower than at sea level. Even in the summer it is still very cool; in the winter there is frost above 1000m, and snow can be found above 1600m. The varied clouds, mist, frost and snow are the notable features of Taipingshan.
