The Peregrine Falcon Story, Winter 2008–09 Update

During the winter of 2006–2007, a pair of Peregrine Falcons, Falco peregrinus, adopted a sheltered ledge of a tall building in Kaohsiung as a place to eat some of their meals.  Kaohsiung resident Jason Tu 涂宗萍 discovered the falcons there, and has monitored the birds’ activities since that time.  For more background on these birds, please scroll down the Home Page to “The Peregrine Falcon Story.”

The birds were nicknamed “Blackie” and “Whitey” because of their colors.  “Blackie,” the darker and larger of the two, is the female; “Whitey,” the paler, smaller bird, is the male.  As is normal behavior for Peregrines, the female is the dominant bird of the pair and does the hunting, often bringing her catch back to the ledge to eat.  The prey most often caught is Rock Pigeon, Columba livia.  Blackie eats first; Whitey either waits until she has finished, or steals bites when he can.

These three videos by Jason Tu show some of the activities of the Peregrine Falcons.  Blackie nods her head several times before taking off from the ledge.
