Introduction to the Blue Gates

Blue Gate 1 and Blue Gate 2 are under the jurisdiction of Nantou Forest District Office, Forestry Bureau, “Rueiyan River Wildlife Habitat Reserve”. This reserve is located in Renai township, Nantou County, with 2,574 hectares of coverage, from elevation of 1,210 meters to 3,416 meters (trail is at approximately 1800 meters). Vegetation in the reserve includes: deciduous forest, coniferous and broad-leaf mixed forest, coniferous forest, Alpine bush woods, and grass land, etc. The forests contain abundant species of birds, mammals, fishes in forest streams and various kinds of other eco-resources.

This region was established as the Wildlife Habitat Reserve in October, 1991. The Forestry Bureau of Nantou Forest District Office arranged periodic patrols to inspect the grounds, and also organize groups to examine ecosystems in the forests. At present, there are 146 families and 816 species of known plants; 12 families and 26 species of mammals; 34 families and 116 species of birds; 5 families and 20 species of reptiles; 4 families and 9 species of amphibians; and 3 families and 4 species of fishes.

According to the Law of Forestry, those wishing to enter the reserve (the general public or representatives of academic institutions) will be asked to fill out an application (see below) and send to the Forestry Bureau of Nantou Forest District Office for approval.. Methods of delivery include:

1. mail to: 456 Shi-Guan Road, Cao-Tun Town, Nantou County, Taiwan
2. email to: service4@forest.gov.tw
3. fax to: +886-49-2357598

Blue Gate 1 and Blue Gate 2 are also known as the “Waterpipe Road” because of the flexible plastic waterpipes that lie alongside the trail. These pipes carry water from the mountain river down to the communities below. Some of the pipes leak, resulting in continually wet and muddy places, made worse by rain. Rain boots or waterproof hiking boots are strongly recommended for walking the trails.
