Tufted Duck Aythya fuligula
The Tufted Duck is a medium-sized (40-47 cm) duck, the male having a black head with a purple sheen, a long crest drooping from the back of the head, and a blackish body with white sides. The iris is yellow, the bill is gray with a black tip and the legs are gray. The female is dark brown above and lighter brown below, often with some white at the base of the bill and on the chin, a smaller crest and a whitish belly.
The Tufted Duck frequents large, deep freshwater lakes, reservoirs, ponds and, in winter, brackish lagoons and tidal bays. It feeds extensively on invertebrates, especially mussels and gastropods, crustaceans and aquatic insects. It also takes some seeds and green parts of aquatic plants. It feeds mainly by diving, but also by up-ending and dipping.
In Taiwan the Tufted Duck is a locally common winter resident.
