Pale Thrush Turdus pallidus
The Pale Thrush (23 cm) is a medium-sized thrush with a brown back, white belly and brownish gray flanks. The male’s head and throat are brownish gray, while the female has a brown head and a white throat with fine black streaks. The outer two tail feathers are broadly tipped white. The iris is brown, the bill is gray above and yellow below, and the legs are yellowish brown.
The Pale Thrush prefers the understory of dense forest, feeding on insects and spiders as well as fruits and seeds. It forages mainly on the ground in leaf litter, but also in trees and bushes for berries. Its calls include a harsh “chuck-chuck” and a high “tzeeee” flight note.
In Taiwan the Pale Thrush is a common winter resident in low- to mid-elevation forests.
