Chinese Goshawk Accipiter soloensis
The Chinese Goshawk is a small (27-35 cm) hawk with pale blue-gray upperparts, a light rufous chest and upper belly and white lower belly. The bill is grayish with an orange cere, the legs are orange and the iris is reddish or brownish. Immatures are dark brown above and light below with heavy rufous barring and streaking.
The Chinese Goshawk prefers forests and wooded areas, often near wetlands and rice fields. It feeds extensively on frogs, and also takes large insects such as grasshoppers, lizards and small birds. It hunts mainly from a perch, and catches most of its prey on the ground. The nest is constructed of sticks and lined with green leaves; it is usually placed in a fork or on a branch of a tree. The female lays 3-4 eggs and both parents share in incubation and in feeding of the chicks.
In Taiwan the Chinese Goshawk is a common transient during migration. Some birds are also resident year-round.
