Brown-headed Thrush Turdus chrysolaus
The Brown-headed Thrush (23 cm) is a medium-sized thrush with a slaty-brown head merging to a plain brown back, a chestnut-orange breast and flanks and a white belly. The female is similar to the male but the head and back are more uniformly brown and the throat is whitish with fine dark streaking.
The Brown-headed Thrush frequents a variety of forested and semi-forested habitats, usually preferring fairly dry and open deciduous forest with some shrubby undergrowth including, in winter, second growth, cultivated land, mixed scrub, orchards, parks and gardens. It forages at all levels of the forest, feeding on a variety of insects and spiders as well as on many fruits and berries, especially in winter. Its calls include a harsh “chuck-chuck” and a high “tzeeee” flight note, similar to those of the Pale Thrush.
In Taiwan the Brown-headed Thrush is a common winter resident from lowlands to mid-elevation forests.
